Walking to -- and through -- Baiona

Walking to -- and through -- Baiona
The southern Galician coast

We did this part of the Portugese Camino just over two years ago.

I'm glad we did. It gave us the confidence to know what we could do differently without getting badly lost. Though, that's difficult as long as you...

Keep the sea on your left...

We left Viladesusa at about 0920 and pressed on northwards past our favourite restaurant in these parts.

Looking back towards Viladesusa

The countryside is reminiscent of parts of County Galway. There are small field close to the sea designed to take advantage of the good land and mist or sea fog.

Today was very clear, sunny and just breezy enough to make walking a real pleasure.

Last time we passed a circus suplies outlet. (I know, you just never see them) All that was left of the large plastic clowns we saw last time were the stumps of their legs. Like Ozimandias, it was.

The "official" Canino route, darts off the road, 20m down a steep slope, wanders about closer to the sea, then doubles back, up the slope and rejoins the road. It does this playfully several times. We did it painfully several times last time.

This time we ignored all these diversions, which add little but unnecessary steps and sweat and stuck to the PO-552 which runs pretty much from Aguarda to Biona and beyond.

Rugged rocks

The road has a good, wide cyclepath and is not that heavily used. The sound of the sea outweighs the ocassional road noise.

Fire affected hillside

It was clear that there had been a number of forest fires along the road. And this helped us to make our next decision to ignore the Camino route through the forest. Its normally a pretty route on an old cart track. It cuts a corner snd has good panoramic views in parts. Today we decided to stick to the road, which also has panoramic views of the ocean.

Pinzon who captained the Pinta

We got into Baiona, had a Fanta and glass of water and pressed onto our hotel in Ramallosa.

Baiona is one of the first places that News of Columbus' discovery of the Americas reached. The Pinta, the fastest ship of the flotilla was captained by Pinzon.

Baiona is a small lovely town with a castle, harbour, two beaches and a number of sculptures. It was full so,we had to carry on to Ramallosa.

Public art in Baiona

This hotel doesn’t have the views of our last stay at the Hotel Glasgow, but its quiet, clean and handy for the supermarket. We arrived by 1400.

Tomorrow we're off towards Vigo.
